Young Mariners progress in Youth Cup with impressive derby win
South Shields progressed to the third qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup with an impressive 3-1 win over North Shields at Mariners Park on Monday.
The young Mariners – who previously defeated Gateshead and Carlisle City in the competition – were in confident mood in front of a crowd just short of 400.
Quickfire goals late in the first half from Sam Hodgson and Will Jenkins put them into a commanding position and when Joao Gomes added a third in the second half, the tie was as good as over.
The Robins did score a consolation thanks to a superb free-kick from Josh Skivington, but it was the Mariners who made it through.
Full report to follow.
