Work begins on installing new floodlights at Mariners Park
New floodlights are being installed at Mariners Park this summer – and work is already underway!
Towers are to be erected in each of the four corners of the ground, replacing the six pylons which have been in place since the mid-1990s.
The new lights will have an illuminance of 500 lux – compared to the current 180 lux – and will meet Football League requirements.
The towers will be 20m in height and are scheduled to be in position for the start of the 2019-20 Evo-Stik Premier Division campaign. The existing lights will remain in place until the work is completed.
The club colours will feature prominently on the structure, with the circular outline of each set of lights to be either claret or blue.
South Shields FC Managing Director Keith Finnigan said: “The erection of new floodlights has been part of our planning for some time, so it is pleasing that it will come to fruition this summer.
“It represents a significant investment with the long-term in mind, and will help to give the ground a refreshed, more modern look, whilst at the same timing continuing our Project EFL evolution.
“We are committed to improving supporter experience as much as we can, and are confident this will contribute to that, particularly for night games.”
The floodlights will be the second addition to the facilities at Mariners Park this summer.
A borehole has also been introduced on site to supply water for pitch watering, making the process more cost-effective in the long-term.
Pitch regeneration works have already been completed to ensure the playing surface is in the best possible condition for the start of pre-season.
*The club will keep supporters up-to-date with the progress of the floodlight installation throughout the process.
