VIDEO: Awards for Smith, Byrne and Turner at presentation evening
The club would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended the 2015-16 presentation night at Mariners Park on Sunday.
You can watch a video of the highlights from the evening above.
Five awards were handed out to South Shields players, while the club’s volunteers and staff were also recognised, and there was a performance from singer and guitarist Tony Bengtsson.
The first award of the night went to Warren Byrne, who was given a trophy for finishing as the club’s top goalscorer, with 31 strikes this season. He is pictured below receiving his award from club secretary Philip Reay.
Barrie Smith then stepped forward as the winner of the Supporters’ Player of the Year award, with votes having been cast online to choose the winner. Over 500 votes came in, and Barrie edged out stiff competition from the likes of Byrne, Michael Turner and Julio Arca to win with 22% of the votes. Barrie is pictured below collecting his award from Janet Davies and Bob Scott.
Michael Turner (below) was named the Young Player of the Year for his outstanding performances in defence, both at left-back and in the centre. One of his most memorable moments this season was the winning goal he scored at Easington Colliery to seal promotion in April.
Smith was again called to the stage after being named as the Players’ Player of the Year. This saw all of the Shields players cast votes, and Barrie came out on top with eight. The votes were made on video and then played back to the crowd on presentation night, and some of the selections prompted plenty of chuckles – particularly Leepaul Scroggins’ vote for ‘Barry Hall’. You can see the votes in the video at the top of this page, and also in a separate video below – although the below video will not be available to view on mobile devices.
Finally, Smith completed a hat-trick of awards – for the second season in a row – by claiming the club’s Player of the Year award. Below, he collects that from club sponsor Shaun Matthias.
Once again, we would like to thank everyone who attended the night, and we hope you enjoyed the evening.
