South Shields Under-18s exited the league cup recently to Darlington 1883 in an entertaining 3-2 defeat.
The Mariners’ goalscorers were Davidson and Bayles.
Coach Kevin Bolam said: “If the game had been another five minutes long we would, we feel, have taken it to extra-time, as Darlo could not get out of their penalty area, let alone half.
“Darlo are strong and have regular representation in the first team from the Under-18s squad.”
The young Mariners returned to league action on Saturday with an excellent 3-1 away win at Norton and Stockton Ancients.
Shields went in 1-0 up at half-time after a good goal from Davidson after excellent build-up play involving Bolam, Bainbridge and Bayles.
They got a second after the break with a good header from Simpson after a ball in from Bolam.
Norton put a little pressure on the Mariners, but Shields got a third on the break through Davidson again, with Norton getting a consolation goal with about 10 minutes remaining.
The young Mariners sit fourth in a very good league, and are back in cup action on Saturday with a difficult trip to face Willington, where they won 4-1 earlier this season in the league.
Shields then have a run of home games through December, when they face New Hartley at Harton Welfare on Saturday, December 6, followed by Darlington 1883 on the 13th.
The young Mariners then face Lambton Street FC at home on the 20th, before seeing out December with another home fixture against Darlington RA. All kick-offs will be at 1.30pm, and any support will be greatly welcomed.
