Under-16s on the brink

South Shields’ Under-16s are on the brink of an incredible treble after winning 2-1 at Cleveland Hall on Saturday.

It would be a terrific achievement in what is the young Mariners’ last season in the Russell Foster Premier League, and they have already won both the County Cup and League Cup this term.

They face Fulwell FC at Gateshead Stadium tonight, and a win would clinch the title for Shields for the sixth year in a row.

Aidan Heywood and Dan Ward scored the goals in Sunday’s victory.

Both were excellently-worked goals through midfield, with both central midfielders finishing well when one-on-one with the keeper.

Credit must also go to Cleveland Hall, who played their part in a good game of youth football.
