Treble secured by Under-16s
South Shields Under-16s completed a remarkable treble last night by getting the win they needed to claim the Russell Foster Premier League title.
They beat a very good West Auckland Juniors side 1-0 in a hard-fought game.
The winning goal came when Jordan Lee finished with a well-struck effort from the edge of the box.
Shields had good chances to get a second and had a goal ruled out after taking a quick free-kick.
West Auckland were always a threat until the final whistle, and the young Mariners had to stay focused to clinch their sixth league title in a row.
They had already won both the County Cup and League Cup this term, although their season is not yet over.
The Under-16s end the campaign at the club’s adopted home of Eden Lane, in Peterlee, on Sunday against Peterlee Juniors. Kick-off is at 9.30am.
Coach Kevin Bolam said: “The celebrations will start straight after the game, after what has been an excellent season by a great bunch of kids.
“They fully deserve their rewards, and each and every one of them have played their part in our success this season.
“I’m really proud of them all.”
