South Shields have been handed another mouth-watering Emirates FA Cup tie after being drawn against York City in the third qualifying round.
The match, which is due to be held on the weekend of Saturday, September 30, will see last season’s FA Vase and FA Trophy winners go head-to-head at Mariners Park.
It is the Mariners’ first involvement at this stage of the competition since 1997, and they couldn’t have picked much higher-profile opponents than the Minstermen.
Gary Mills’ team won 2-1 at Salford City in the second qualifying round on Saturday, and are seventh in the National League North.
Just one-and-a-half years ago, York was a Football League club, but back-to-back relegations sent them into the sixth tier of English football for the first time.
The tie is Shields’ reward for their excellent 3-0 win at York’s National League North rivals Darlington on Saturday.
They have also seen off Bridlington Town and Witton Albion in the competition so far.
Ticketing details for the York game will be announced in due course.
Meanwhile, as a result of the club’s progression in the Emirates FA Cup, the EVO-STIK North trip to Radcliffe Borough – which was scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 30 – has now been postponed. A new date will be announced in due course.
