South Shields FC has linked up with Whitburn Golf Club as part of an exciting mutual sponsorship.

As part of the deal, Mariners supporters were asked to follow the golf club on Twitter and retweet a post for the chance or winning a 2018 membership at Whitburn.

Six runners-up received a four-ball voucher, and there will also be monthly draws for additional four-ball vouchers.

The golf club, meanwhile, are to have a crowd-facing advertising board installed at Mariners Park, and will host the SSFC Members’ Club’s Golf Day on Saturday, May 12.

Whitburn have also agreed to reduced golf rates for SSFC players and staff as part of the ongoing deal.

The golf club’s treasurer, Ian McConnell, said: “Our professional, Greg Jobling, and I were warmly welcomed by SSFC Managing Director Keith Finnigan and Commercial Director David Mitchell.

“In chatting, we discovered many ways in which we could be mutually beneficial in these challenging times.

“Geographically we are just over four miles apart. Many of our members follow SSFC, and we hope their players, staff and supporters will enjoy our hospitality when SSFC aren’t playing.”

The winner of the Twitter competition was actually a former Whitburn member, now living in Gateshead, and an 11-handicap member of Heworth.

Michael Walker did not need a guided tour of the facilities when he called to collect his prize from Whitburn professional Greg Jobling.

Many of Michael’s friends still play at Whitburn, and he said he was “delighted” to learn of his win and to have the opportunity for free golf with his former playing partners.

The 42-year-old Gateshead Council employee will certainly have his weekends full now, because as well as two golf clubs to choose from, he also follows South Shields FC, Sunderland AFC and his young son Mason’s team.
