Wayne Buchanan has joked that he hopes he will save some goals for the competitive fixtures after netting for the second time in as many games.

Buchanan scored South Shields’ equaliser in Saturday’s 4-1 friendly win over Newton Aycliffe, following on from his goal in the midweek victory against Durham City.

In the video above, the defender talks about his goalscoring form, and his thoughts on how well the Mariners have done recently.

Buchanan also looks ahead to Tuesday’s friendly against Blyth Spartans at Mariners Park, which will see him come up against a club he represented for three years between 2010 and 2013.

New signing Wayne Buchanan says he is ‘very excited’ after completing a move to South Shields.

The former Lisburn Distillery and Blyth Spartans captain, who started his career at Bolton Wanderers, has come in to bolster the Mariners’ defence.

South Shields FC is delighted to announce the signings of defender Wayne Buchanan and striker Lee Scott.

Buchanan (main image), formerly of the likes of Bolton Wanderers, Lisburn Distillery and Blyth Spartans, brings a wealth of experience to Mariners Park.

Scott, meanwhile (pictured below), notched 21 goals in Ebac Northern League Division One last season, and will bolster Shields’ forward line.

Buchanan, 33, played under Shields assistant manager Gary Middleton at Ashington last season, and is ‘excited’ about the future.

He said: “I’m very excited to be on board, and am looking forward to the challenge ahead.

“I spoke to a lot of First Division clubs over the summer, but after speaking to Gary Middleton and (manager) Jon King, this was the club I wanted to join.

“The ambition of the club convinced me to come here, as did the fact that the club was so keen for me to join. I just felt that it was right for me.

“The project we have here, with getting good characters on board, and the club wanting to go up the ladder, is great.

“We’ll have to take it one game at a time and one season at a time, but it’s nice that there’s a target there and the club wants to progress.”

He added: “I was a scholar for three years and a pro for two at Bolton, and after a spell on loan at Chesterfield, I went back home to play for Lisburn Distillery in the Northern Irish league.

“I was captain of the side for most of my time there, played in Europe and had great experiences.

“I played for my country from under-15 level right up to under-23s, and also had spells with two clubs in Australia before joining Gateshead, and later having a great time as captain at Blyth Spartans.

“More recently, I’ve played for Morpeth and Ashington in the Northern League.

“I like to stay at clubs for long periods, as I did at Lisburn Distillery, and hopefully this is me now, I can have a few seasons at this club and finish my career here on a high.”
