South Shields Reserves suffered an agonising 4-3 defeat to Harton and Westoe in the Wearside League as the hosts launched a late comeback on Friday.

The Mariners fell behind within the first three minutes, but battled back against the wind to equalise with an excellent strike from David Conroy which kissed the post before going in.

Shields deservedly went in front before half-time as they took advantage of their good possession, with Siy Choudhury racing through on goal before finishing well.

Harton and Westoe got back on level terms early in the second half as a free-kick from the left was headed in, but Shields showed good character, and an excellent finish from Logan Powell – pictured – looked to have got them in the driving seat.

The home side battled back in the closing stages, though, equalising in the 82nd minute before a stoppage time winner condemned the Mariners to a second consecutive defeat.

Leepaul Scroggins’ side will look to bounce back next Saturday when they travel to Wolviston in the Wearside League.
