The club is delighted to announce the appointment of Simon ‘Cat’ Parkin as goalkeeping coach.
The move marks a return to Mariners Park for Cat, who had a number of spells with the club as a player.
His most recent appearance in goal for the club came in October 2014, when he represented his hometown team for the 75th time.
He made 16 clean sheets during his time with the Mariners, and even got on the scoresheet once.
After returning to the club on the coaching staff, Cat could not hide his excitement.
He said: “I’m very, very excited. Once I got the call from Jon last week, I couldn’t wait to get started.
“It’s my hometown club, I love it here, and it’s great to be back a part of it again. There are exciting times ahead.
“My time here was the highlight of my playing days.
“I was excited about coming back, but after I came down and had a look at all the changes which have been made at the ground, I was jumping around all over.
“I’m trying to hold my excitement in, and I can’t wait to get my gloves on.”
Veteran goalkeeper Simon ‘Cat’ Parkin has returned to South Shields for another spell.
The 41-year-old is available for tomorrow’s Durham Challenge Cup tie at Peterlee against Easington Colliery.
‘Cat’ has made 74 appearances for Shields over his numerous spells, and even has a goal to his name.
Parkin has recorded 16 clean sheets so far for the Mariners, and played four times for the club last season.
Welcome back, Cat!
