Goalkeeper Paul Woolston has joined South Shields on loan from Newcastle United until the end of the season.
The highly-rated 19-year-old is in contention to make his debut for the Mariners in Saturday’s Evo-Stik North Division trip to Atherton Collieries.
He spent six months with Blyth and was an almost ever-present as they comfortably won the Evo-Stik Premier Division on 101 points. Woolston also won the Northumberland Senior Cup during his time with the club.
The Washington-based stopper is regarded highly at Newcastle, having progressed through the ranks at St James’s Park.
He made his debut for the Magpies’ Under-21s side at the age of just 15 – and marked the occasion with a clean sheet in a victory over Manchester United. Woolston’s impressive performance caught the eye of then first-team manager Alan Pardew, who praised him afterwards.
The goalkeeper has also had short loan spells with Darlington and Gateshead in the past.
Woolston has regularly trained with Newcastle’s first-team, and will now be looking to continue his development at Mariners Park.
Welcome to the club, Paul!
