South Shields travel to Ryton and Crawcrook Albion on Wednesday as they begin their bid to reclaim the Durham Challenge Cup.

The Mariners reached the final of the competition last season before a youthful side was beaten narrowly by Shildon at the Stadium of Light.

Shields last won it in the 2016-17 campaign when they saw off Billingham Synthonia in the final, and they are eager for another strong run in the competition.

In-form Academy prospects Will Jenkins, Sam Hodgson and Mathew Wade could all make their first-team debuts for the club in Wednesday’s match at Kingsley Park.

The trio have played a key part in Shields’ run to theĀ first round of the FA Youth Cup and are now in line for their senior bow.

Joint manager Graham Fenton says all three fully merit their inclusion in the squad.

He said: “We’re delighted to welcome three academy lads into the first-team squad for the first time this season.

“They thoroughly deserve their opportunity and we’re looking forward to watching them play alongside the first-team players.”

The Mariners are looking to return to winning ways after picking up one point from their last two games in the league.

They are now on a break from league action, with a trip to Stalybridge Celtic in the Buildbase FA Trophy coming up on Saturday.

Fenton and fellow joint manager Lee Picton are bidding to build up some momentum and have named a strong squad for Wednesday’s match, with the likes of Dillon Morse, Robert Briggs, Phil Turnbull and Jason Gilchrist all included.

Kick-off at Kingsley Park – which has a post code of NE40 3SN – is at 7.30pm.
