First-team coach Mark Scott felt Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with a Spennymoor Town XI was another step in the right direction for his South Shields players.

However, Scott is now hoping the Mariners will step it up a level in the forthcoming pre-season fixtures, starting at Seaham Red Star on Thursday.

In the video above, he discusses the Spennymoor game, the pre-season so far and why he prefers to sit in the stand.

New South Shields coach Mark Scott says he wants to see the club playing “attractive, attacking football” next season.

Scott – who was confirmed as an addition to Jon King’s backroom team on Sunday – is “chomping at the bit” to get started.

And in the video above, he talks about his role at the club, his football philosophy and thoughts about the potential of the club.

South Shields are pleased to confirm the appointment of Mark Scott as first-team coach.

Scott will work with manager Jon King as part of his backroom staff, and is returning to a club he spent a season playing for in the 1990s.

The former defender has been part of well-respected management teams at Billingham Town and Billingham Synthonia, and is now looking forward to the challenge ahead at Mariners Park.

The UEFA A Licence-qualified coach said: “I can’t wait to get started, really.

“These are really exciting times for the whole club and the town.

“The plans for the club itself and the ground, and our plans for what is going to happen on the pitch, are really exciting.

“I was here for one season as a player when I left Gateshead, and I was attracted by the club then.

“It has always been a massive club with a great following – we always had good crowds in those days – and we actually had a good team.

“For whatever reason, it didn’t quite click that season, but I enjoyed my time here and have recognised a few familiar faces since I came back.

“I’ve had a little bit of a nice break since leaving Billingham Synthonia, and I’ve enjoyed that, but I’m chomping at the bit now and can’t wait to get going again.”
