Among the first to sign-up for one of our all-new player sponsorship packages was SSFC non-executive director Paul Macpherson, who has thrown his support behind summer arrival Mackenzie Heaney.

Paul said: “I’m delighted to be able to sponsor one of our new signings ahead of the 2022-23 season.

“For me it always adds extra excitement when I see my player doing well, and taking the opportunity to be involved with the player throughout the season.

“I’m excited to see how Mackenzie performs and grows with the squad this season and look forward to catching up with him as the season progresses.

“The player and management sponsorships are a vital part of our income and ensure we are able to provide the equipment and kit to enable the players to give their best.”

Mackenzie said: “It was great to meet Paul and thank him for his support.

“I feel honoured by the welcome I’ve been provided since signing for the club and to have someone like Paul willing to show his backing for me in this way is another real privilege.

“I look forward to speaking with Paul throughout the season, which we are aiming to ensure is a very exciting one for the club.”

After Mackenzie Heaney was confirmed as South Shields’ first signing ahead of the 2022-23 season, we take a look at the 23-year-old’s career to date.

  • Mackenzie Heaney was born on January 2nd, 1999 in Walker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
  • He joined the Newcastle United Academy at the age of 12 and just two years later, he agreed what was effectively a four-year professional deal
  • As his name suggests, Heaney was eligible to represent Scotland through his grandfather, and he starred for the country in the prestigious Victory Shield as a 14-year-old playing Under-15s football. He helped the Scots win the competition for the first time in over a decade
  • Heaney switched allegiances to England in 2014 and was involved in youth squads on a regular basis in the following year, winning 12 caps for the Young Lions, many of them under the management of current Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper
  • He made his debut for Newcastle’s Under-18s at the age of 15, initially on the right-wing before switching to his preferred No.10 role
  • Heaney won the golden boot at the renowned Milk Cup youth tournament for Newcastle in 2015
  • In 2016, the midfielder was named by the BBC’s Match of the Day magazine as one of 20 ‘wonderkids’ to watch
  • Opportunities were not forthcoming at Under-23s level at Newcastle and Heaney departed his boyhood club in the summer of 2018
  • He trained with Norwich City and Brentford that summer and also had interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Coventry City
  • Heaney made his first foray into senior football in the Northern League with Newcastle Benfield and West Auckland Town
  • He took some time out of the game to concentrate on his fitness between 2019 and 2020 and returned to football with Whitby Town in the Pitching In Northern Premier League
  • When two successive seasons were impacted by the pandemic, Heaney spent a short time on loan with Icelandic second tier side UMF Grindavík to further build his experience
  • Heaney had a trial with York City in the summer of 2021 and his ability earned him a deal with the National League North side, who he represented 20 times in the first half of last season
  • He joined Buxton on loan in January 2022 and helped the Bucks win the Pitching In Northern Premier League title
  • Heaney now returns to the North East to begin the next chapter of his football journey with South Shields

We are delighted to welcome Mackenzie Heaney as our first signing of the summer.

Heaney arrives fresh from winning promotion from the Pitching In Northern Premier League with Buxton, where he played an important role in the latter stages of the season as the Bucks sealed the league title.

The attacking midfielder was on loan at Buxton from York City, where he played 20 times in the first half of last season.

A player who represented both England and Scotland at junior levels, Heaney came through the Newcastle United Academy and has also had spells with Whitby Town, Newcastle Benfield, West Auckland Town and Icelandic side Grindavík.

The 23-year-old said: “I’m delighted it is done and very excited to be here.

“I’m pleased to have my future sorted very early in the summer and now it’s time to get ready for pre-season.

“This is a massive club at this level, especially when you look at the ground and the training ground, which are amazing.

“Myself and the club want to achieve the same thing, which is to win the league, and I can’t wait to get started.”

South Shields manager Kevin Phillips said: “I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Mackenzie Heaney as our first signing.

“He is a player who I firmly believe will excite our fans and I’m thoroughly looking forward to working with him.

“Technically, he is a very impressive player and he is also a dead ball specialist who has a great ability to score goals.

“Mackenzie is incredibly talented and is a young player who I am sure will develop further in the years to come.

“He will be the first of many new players to join us in the coming weeks, which we hope will whet the appetite of our fans ahead of pre-season.”

You can watch Mackenzie and his new team-mates in every home league match of the 2022-23 season by purchasing a season ticket.

Season tickets go on general sale from www.southshieldsfc.co.uk at 12pm on Friday, and can also be purchased in person or by calling 0191 454 7800 between 10am and 4pm on weekdays.
