Primary school children are being given the chance to design next season’s South Shields FC away kit.

A competition to design the strip was launched earlier this week, and will run until Friday, June 17.

The kit will be worn by the Mariners in the 2016-17 season, and the competition was launched on Thursday when manager Jon King, Player of the Year Barrie Smith and commercial and events manager Alisha Henry visited Stanhope Primary School, in Gresford Street, South Shields, to launch the week-long competition.

There will be a prize for the lucky winner, who will have their name printed on every shirt, but entries must be made quickly.

Miss Henry says the competition is a great way for the club to reach out further to the community, who backed the Mariners last season with an average attendance of close to 800.

She said: “Attendances last season at Mariners Park were fantastic, and we were particularly pleased to see so many young people supporting us.

“We want to involve ourselves with the community as much as possible, and thought this would be an ideal way to reach out to some of our youngest supporters.

“We can’t wait to see the designs, and I’m sure we’re going to have a very difficult job selecting the winner.”

Shields will compete in Northern League Division One next season after winning promotion last time out.

The club’s manager, Mr King, said: “It was great for myself and Barrie to be able to visit Stanhope to launch the away kit competition.

“The children seemed to be very excited about the prospect of their design being our away kit for next season.

“A few of us have already said that it will be a tough choice to pick the winner – I’m sure the competition will be fierce.”

Designs can be sent via post to Mariners Park, Shaftesbury Avenue, South Shields, NE32 3UP, or submitted by visiting the ground in person. Entries can also be made by sending them via email to The template does not have to be used, although space should be left for the club badge and sponsor.
