The family of a loyal and ardent South Shields supporter have told of their gratitude after his final wish was granted.

Jim Stidolph sadly passed away in August 2020, having closely followed the fortunes of the Mariners for decades.

From taking his son David to watch games at Simonside Hall to later playing at 1st Cloud Arena – then known as Filtrona Park – for Cigarette Components and then Filtrona, he proudly supported the town’s team.

He attended every home match, watching the action unfold from his own spot, and enjoyed one of his proudest moments when he travelled to Wembley to see South Shields lift the FA Vase at the age of 83.

His final wish was that after his passing, his ashes would be scattered on the centre circle of the pitch at 1st Cloud Arena.

The family has now been able to fulfil that wish and finally lay Jim to rest where he wanted to be.

Jim’s wife Pat said: “South Shields FC were fantastic in accommodating and helping us make Jim’s wish happen.”

The family wished to reiterate their thanks to the club for the support given, which they said was “testament to the huge role the club is playing in the community”.

Rest in peace, Jim.
