A remarkable few weeks for South Shields striker Warren Byrne has reached another height after he won Budweiser’s Dream Goal competition.
The contest saw non-league clubs and players send in their best goals of the season in a bid to find the campaign’s top grassroots strike.
After hundreds of entries, Warren made it onto the final shortlist for his goal against Tow Law Town in April, with the winner to be selected by former England internationals Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp.
They picked out Warren’s incredible volley as their favourite, and he was revealed as the winner of the competition when an advert was aired on Sky Sports on Sunday afternoon.
In the advert, former Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton midfielder Redknapp said: “What a great goal it is.
“It came down with snow on it, and as that ball falls to Byrne, he’s on the edge of the box and hovering.
“He takes two good touches and then hits a dipping left foot volley into the corner. It’s a beauty.
“You’ve got to enjoy that, because there are not many moments as good as that. It’s a great goal.
“He deserves the analysis, because this is the Dream Goal. Byrne hovered on the edge of the box and knew something might happen. He thought, ‘there’s no point going in there. I’ll hold my ground, and if the ball falls to me on the edge of the box, I might be able to do something special’. He certainly did that.
“It was a lovely, silky first touch, he popped it up into the air with his right foot over his head and then a left foot volley to finish.”
It caps an incredible few weeks for Warren, whose goal has been viewed well over 3.5million times online, while he has also appeared on Sky Sports show Soccer AM, as well as the BBC and ITV regional news and broadcasters across the globe.
Well done, Warren!
