Warren Byrne’s incredible goal for South Shields against Tow Law Town in April gained yet more recognition as he picked up a Best of South Tyneside Award on Thursday.

The striker was invited to the Quality Hotel, in Boldon, as one of three nominees for the Sporting Excellence award on a night organised by the Shields Gazette.

Warren Byrne award 2And he beat off strong competition from swimmer Josef Craig and fitness instructor Ant Clennan to win the prize.

The Mariners were also nominated in the Sports Team of the Year category, but were beaten by champion gymnasts Kristie Harrington, Sofie Lincoln and Gabrielle Evans.

After Warren was presented with his award, host Ray Spencer interviewed him on stage while the large audience was shown the remarkable goal on a giant screen.

It follows on from Warren winning the Budweiser Dream Goal competition, appearing on Sky Sports show Soccer AM and several regional news shows, and in both local and national newspapers.

Warren Byrne award 3He also won the award for CNN’s Goal of the Week, while the goal has now been viewed well over 5million times online, and several million more times on Budweiser TV adverts.

Warren was involved in an inspiring night at the Quality Hotel, when many of South Tyneside’s unsung heroes and top achievers were recognised.

The club would like to congratulate all of those who won awards and all of those who were nominated. Community heroes were rightly hailed on what was an emotional and uplifting night.
