Jon King has sung the praises of South Shields winger Abu Salim after an impressive performance in Saturday’s loss to Norton and Stockton Ancients.
Salim has been named in the starting line-up for the Mariners’ last two games, and particularly impressed at the weekend.
King described him as Shields’ “star player” on a day they fell to a narrow 3-2 loss to promotion chasers Norton.
Salim has had to be patient for his chances in recent weeks, but was also impressive against Team Northumbria last Monday.
King has been delighted with his impact, and is seeing real signs of improvement in the winger.
He said: “Abu Salim was our star player on Saturday – he was absolutely fantastic.
“Every time he got the ball, he was a major threat. He used his pace and trickery to great effect and I was delighted with his performance.
“Abu didn’t quite take his chances at the start of the season.
“In his time out of the side, though, and sometimes out of the matchday squad, he hasn’t missed any games or training sessions.
“He was always going to get another chance, and he has certainly grasped it.
“He was certainly our best player on Saturday.
“He has great trickery, lots of pace and his end product is getting a bit better. He also worked extremely hard for the team, helping his full-backs out.”
