SSFC Ladies ready for County Cup semi-final
South Shields FC Ladies take on Sunderland West End in the Durham County Cup semi-final on Sunday as the Mariners look to progress to the final for a second year running.
The Mariners dispatched Gateshead in the quarter-final, triumphing 4-1 at Harton Welfare, and are now aiming to build on that and go one further.
The semi-final will take place at Herrington Recreational Park (Langley Street, DH4 4LN), and will kick-off at 1.30pm.
The last time the two sides met, Shields came out on top, coming from behind to beat West End 2-1, courtesy of goals from Alex Miller and Caitlin Bates.
Ben Garrity’s side will be looking to bounce back after they suffered defeat at the hands of Hartlepool in their last outing.
Giving an insight into the team’s build-up for the semi-final, head coach Garrity said: “Going into the game, we find ourselves in a little bit of a rough patch.
“We do have some big players injured, suspended or playing with injuries, and if you take away three or four of your regular starting 11 it will have a negative impact on any team at any level, which is evident here.
“We are hopefully coming out of that rough patch now and what better way to do it then by getting to the final of the County Cup.”
Shields reached the final of the County Cup last season, but were beaten 6-1 by Durham Cestria at Harton.
There is no doubting improvements the team has made since then, and they go into Sunday’s tie confident of their chances of not just reaching the final again, but potentially winning the competition.
Garrity added: “When I came in last year, the Lasses reached the final of the County Cup, so it would be good to repeat that and hopefully this year put everything into going one better than just reaching the final.
“We just need to get back to basics and get back to working for each other, and if we do that I’ve got no doubts we will be fine.
“We would massively appreciate any support on Sunday, as we do every week, so if you are free please come down and support the Lasses and help push them into the final.”
