South Shields vs Whickham Preview

By Bob Wray

The Mariners welcome Whickham to the Eden Lane sports facility on Saturday, November 23rd for an Ebac Northern League fixture, with the kick off at 3pm.

While only two league defeats have been conceded in the last 10 games, and in point of fact a total of five all season to date, the uncomfortable fact remains that the club are currently but seven points above a relegation place.

Having said that, it is time perhaps for reflection on some matters.

It is no secret that there is a total of 47 names on the league club squad list, known to be somewhat out of date, but which gives a misleading background to the current situation regarding the availability of players, specifically for midweek games.

That said, the game on Tuesday had too many first choice players absent through work circumstances, plus an incomplete bench.

The situation is the result of too many shift workers with the club, which in consequence does nothing to assist selection availability, and in reality makes them worse, and creates instability.

The solution is the signing of players who are not shift workers, or who can arrange shift changes to accommodate midweek games.

That, allied to the added problem of a restricted budget on account of the current ground location, just adds to the current situation.

It is all very easily said, and we could all be managers, but at the end of the day, matters need to be addressed and changed.

Midweek league games should for the foreseeable future now be few and far between if indeed any, save for the end of the season. Depending on progress in the cups, that is.

So one problem will be eased and hopefully the matter of league points will be foremost.
