South Shields vs Brandon United Preview

By Daniel Prince

Brandon United are the visitors to Peterlee tomorrow (Thursday) as South Shields play their penultimate game of the season.

Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to Washington meant Shields stayed 16th in Northern League Division Two, but they could still move up or down a place within the next two games.

Brandon, meanwhile, are 20th, but are no longer in danger of being relegated.

Tomorrow’s game is their final outing of the season, and they go into it on the back of a 3-0 home loss to Tow Law Town last Wednesday.

Shields, though, are hopeful of picking up maximum points from their final two matches as they aim to finish the season on a high.

Ryton & Crawcrook Albion are their final opponents, on Saturday, and will go to Peterlee knowing they need all three points to avoid relegation.

Of more immediate concern to the Mariners, though, are Brandon, who drew 1-1 with Shields when they met earlier in the season.

Jon King’s side will have two goalkeepers available for the game, with Brett Wilson and Simon Parkin set to fight it out for a place in the side.

Regular keeper Jak Wells will miss the rest of the season with a rib injury.

Barrie Smith is expected to return against Brandon after missing the Washington game due to a groin injury.

Tony Burnell, meanwhile, will miss the last two games after hurting his back in a car crash, while Adam Burnicle and Richie Logan are out of the Brandon match due to work.

Alex Berhan and Brian Rowe are available, but David Halliday is expected to miss the last two games after picking up an injury against Washington.

Colin White is out of tomorrow’s game, but is expected to return for Saturday’s match with Ryton.
