South Shields vs Alnwick Town Preview
By Daniel Prince
South Shields play for the second time in less than 48 hours tomorrow (Saturday) when they host Alnwick Town in Northern League Division Two.
The Mariners were thrashed 4-0 at Whitehaven on Thursday after the longest trip of the season.
After the team was stuck in delays on the way to the match, the game did not kick-off until 8.30pm, meaning they did not arrive home until around 2am on Friday.
However, they are back in action at 3pm tomorrow as they go in search of league points in their quest to finish in the top half.
Thursday’s defeat means Shields remain in 16th position, although a top-half finish is still possible due to the number of games they have in hand.
To do that, though, they will need to get points on the board soon, with the Mariners having won just once in eight matches since the turn of the year.
The lack of games due to the weather has played its part in that, but Jon King and his side will be looking for an improvement over the final weeks of the campaign.
The match against Alnwick sees Shields come up against another side currently below them in the table, with tomorrow’s visitors to Peterlee’s Eden Lane sitting 19th.
They are six points behind the Mariners but have played five more games, and will see this as an opportunity to close the gap.
Shields, though, have their sights set on the sides immediately above them, with a clutch of teams enjoying points tallies in the high 40s, and Shields currently on 38, having played five less games than most of those above.
With such a quick turnaround from Thursday, the Mariners will be hoping tiredness does not play a part in the 3pm kick-off.
When the sides met in November, they played out a 1-1 draw in a match which was affected by gale force winds.
