South Shields 1-1 Thornaby

South Shields lived up to their reputation as Northern League Division Two draw specialists with a 1-1 stalemate against Thornaby.

It was the 13th draw of the season for the Mariners from 27 games, and kept them 16th in the table.

Shields started brightly at Peterlee’s Eden Lane, with Stephen Ramsey seeing a header from eight yards saved by Thornaby goalkeeper Michael Duff.

However, the Mariners did get their noses in front on 12 minutes.

Ben Riding’s long throw found Richard Logan, who turned and fired in.

Jon King’s side continued to dominate, with Peter Kane’s shot turned over the bar by Duff.

Against the run of play, though, Thornaby equalised just after the half-hour.

A long clearance by Duff found Gerard Livingstone, who chipped Jak Wells to get Thornaby back on level terms.

Both sides had decent opportunities in the second half, with Kane seeing two good efforts saved by Duff.

Ian Bishop was sent off for the visitors five minutes from the end after an apparent elbow, but neither side was able to get the winner.

Shields will hope to get back to winning ways on Saturday, when they play host to Norton and Stockton Ancients in the league.
