South Shields 1-1 Seaham Red Star
South Shields started the game on the front foot as they took the game to their visitors Seaham Red Star; the early pressure was rewarded on 4 mins as a long throw by Ben Riding was met by Jordan Fraser and his glancing header looped over the defence and beyond the reach of Shaun Newbrook to give Shields an early advantage.
Shields maintained the pressure on the visitor’s defence, Adam Burnicle collected the ball wide on the right flank and raced past his marker before crossing the ball to Tony Coe but his shot flew high over the bar.
As the ¼ hour mark approached Shields were awarded a free kick 20 yards from goal, Tony Coe fired the ball over the defensive wall unfortunately the ball also flew just over the Seaham bar.
A minute later a Shields corner was sent into the box by Tony Coe, Ben Riding headed the ball into the path of Adam Burnicle but his shot was well saved by Newbrook in the Seaham goal.
On 20 mins Seaham made their first foray into the Shields half and were awarded a free kick on the angle of the box, Alex Francis fired the ball towards the corner of the Shields goal but he was denied by a superb diving save by Jack Wells. The resulting corner was fired into the box by Francis to Sean Reay on the edge of the box but his shot failed to trouble Wells in the Shields goal.
Shields responded well and Tony Coe volley from the edge of the box was tipped over the bar By Newbrook in the Seaham goal.
Minutes later Barrie won the ball in the centre of the park, he turned past his marker before crossing for Jordan Fraser; Fraser headed the ball towards goal but he was denied by a diving save by Newbrook.
With 3 mins remaining in the first half Shields were reduced to 10 men following a red card for Tony Coe.
With the first half into added time Seaham thought they had restored parity but Shannon North saw his effort ruled out for off side and Shields went into the break a goal to the good.
At the start of the second half a sea ham corner on the left was floated into the box by Francis towards Sean Reay but he fired his shot wide.
From the restart the ball fell to Barrie Smith, Smith outpaced his marker before cutting in towards goal but his shot was blocked by the Seaham defence.
A minute later Shields pressed forward again as Adam Burnicle raced down the right flank but his shot from the edge of the box was comfortably saved by Newbrook.
As the game approached the 65 minute mark Shields were awarded a penalty when former Mariner hauled down Stephen Ramsey; Ramsey himself stepped forward to take the penalty kick but he fired the ball over the bar.
As the game approached the final 15 mins the visitors began to dominate winning a series of corners but they were unable to take advantage as the Shields defence held firm.
With the game approaching the 7th minute of added time following a scramble in the Shields box the ball fell to North and he tapped in from close range to give the visitors a share in the points.
