South Shields 0-2 Huddersfield Town XI: Shields beaten at Mariners Park
An impressive young Huddersfield Town side won 2-0 at Mariners Park on Wednesday as South Shields continued their preparations for the new season.
The Terriers included former Shields academy winger Will McCamley in their starting line-up, with the game having been arranged following the teenager’s move to Yorkshire at the end of last season.
It was the Mariners who created the first opportunity of the night, but Lee Mason headed over from a Josh Gillies free-kick.
McCamley made his first impact on the game soon after as he drove down the wing and knocked the ball in for Kit Elliott, who could only divert it over from close range.
In the 10th minute, though, Elliott did get on the scoresheet after he converted a penalty following a foul by Shields midfielder Phil Turnbull in the box.
The Mariners responded well to falling behind and some good interplay between Blair Adams and Gillies led to a cross into the box which David Foley was just unable to get on the end of.
Luke Daly sent an effort over for Shields early in the second half, but the hosts were fortunate not to fall further behind when Tom Bell’s shot was cleared off the line by Adams.
Sam Sharrock-Peplow made it 2-0 with 14 minutes remaining and although the Mariners had some efforts from distance in the closing stages, they were unable to find a way through.
They will continue their pre-season programme on Thursday when they make the short trip to Boldon CA to compete for the Sam Bartram Memorial Trophy.
