Seaham Red Star vs South Shields Preview
By Bob Wray
The Mariners make the short trip to Seaham tomorrow for an Ebac Northern League game against high-flying Red Star, with kick-off at 3pm.
A most competitive match is hopefully anticipated, in what also will be without any doubt a stern test.
The home club are on course for promotion and are well up with the leading pack in the table, so Shields will know just what to expect.
Last Saturday’s disappointing game was a lacklustre affair in which Shields did themselves no favours with not only the loss of two points, but the manner in which some really poor football was served up for those on the terraces.
Ball retention was less than satisfactory, passing skills were poor, with little constructive football on the deck and with far too many pumped high balls, with the result that the show was negative, uninteresting and not at all what is expected.
All agreed that it was quite the poorest game seen for a long time.
Up front, several good scoring chances were wasted when decent finishing could have just about seen the game safe by half-time.
That said, a much better effort is obviously wanted for this next game, and for those in claret and blue to apply themselves to the job in hand, and play to a standard as was seen against the likes of Bishop Auckland and North Shields.
Nine points separate Shields from the third bottom club, and with numerous games in hand they need to take advantage of the situation; it is not necessary to say that points are needed to be put on the board ……
