Sam Bartram Memorial Cup preview

By Daniel Prince

South Shields will take on Boldon CA for the Sam Bartram Memorial Cup tomorrow at the Boldon Colliery Welfare Ground.

The annual game is always a highlight of the pre-season schedule, and is a welcome chance for the Mariners to play in the heart of South Tyneside.

Last year, Shields won the game 7-0 as Bartram – the South Shields-born goalkeeper who played for Boldon Villa before going on to have a superb career with Charlton Athletic – was again honoured.

This is the last game of the Mariners’ pre-season schedule, with the game set to kick-off at 7.30pm.

They will then start their Northern League campaign at Willington, on August 9.

Directions to the ground

There are plenty of parking places at or around the ground (postcode NE35 9HX). Boldon Colliery can also very easily be reached by public transport, with a number of buses passing through the village and Brockley Whins Metro Station under a 10-minute walk away.

If you are coming from the direction of Newcastle, cross the bridge and follow the path as it drops down (and then very steeply back up) Station Burn, crossing the stream at the footbridge. At the top of the hill, take a right along the tarmacked road and then turn left when you reach the main road. The ground is behind and to the left of The Shack Social Club. If you follow the road to the left of Asda towards the hilltop St Nicholas’ Church, you’ll reach the village of West Boldon.

Bus No30 from South Shields Town Centre departs Keppel Street at 6.15pm, and returns from Asda at 9.45pm.

From The Nook, bus NoX34 will depart at 6.38pm, but there is no late return service, so return would need to be made via No30.
