Ryhope CW preview
By Daniel Prince
South Shields kick-off a tough Bank Holiday weekend double-header tomorrow (Saturday) when Ryhope CW visit Mariners Park.
The Mariners could go top of the table with a win following Tuesday’s 2-2 draw at Alnwick Town.
Following the Ryhope game, Shields will make the short trip to Hebburn Town on Monday, so they are set to face two of the Ebac Northern League Division Two promotion favourites in three days.
Ryhope ended Team Northumbria’s 100% start to the season on Tuesday with a 1-0 victory, and having played two games less than Shields so far, they will hope to close the gap to a point with another win.
Mariners first-team coach David Hall has urged the team to “roll their sleeves up” ahead of tomorrow’s 3pm kick-off, which could see Barrie Smith and Leepaul Scroggins make their 200th and 150th appearances for the club respectively.
He said: “My glass is always half-full. We could look back on it at the end of the season as a good point at Alnwick.
“We’re sitting second in the table, with hard games coming up this weekend against Ryhope and Hebburn.
“It will be an important weekend, particularly the Hebburn game, with it being a local derby.
“Both of the teams will be up for it, as will all of the teams we play against this season.
“You saw by Alnwick’s celebrations when they got the second goal how much the draw meant to them.
“People see us as a bit of a scalp this year because of what has gone on and what Geoff (Thompson, chairman) has done for the club, and the players we’ve signed. We’re going to have to live with that.
“On matchdays, we’re going to have to be up for it. We’ll have to be as strong as them, show as much desire as them and want it as much as they do, because we have the quality to get us through.
“We’re going to have to roll our sleeves up every now and again.”
Shields will again be without the injured David Foley at Mariners Park.
