Robert Briggs signs
South Shields Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Robert Briggs from Spennymoor Town.
Briggs, 23, returns to the club he started his Northern League career with as a teenager, after a deal was reached with Spennymoor.
His other former clubs include Gateshead, Blyth Spartans, Sunderland RCA and Shildon, and the goalscoring midfielder is delighted to have returned to Mariners Park.
Briggs said: “It’s great to be back at the club. I’ve got a lot of good memories from my first spell here, and know a lot of the lads.
“I’ve played a lot with the likes of Leepaul Scroggins and Barrie Smith here, as well as Daryll Hall and Lewis Galpin when I was at West Auckland, and I think I’ll fit in pretty well.
“I’ve always had an interest in the club, even when they were playing in Peterlee. I kept in touch with a lot of people at the club.
“I’ve always kept an eye on Shields, and when I heard about the new chairman coming in and the move back to Mariners Park, I was delighted.
“I had a great pre-season at Spennymoor, but didn’t play as much as I would have liked. I spoke to the manager and he said I was in his plans, but when I was told that South Shields had made a bid, it was a no-brainer for me to join.”
“He has been at the club before, is a local lad and is still young. He’s the right age, and can hopefully grow with the club. It’s great to have him on board.
“He’s a good age and has a significant amount of experience behind him as well. He’s a winner, and a fantastic player, with great qualities.
“To be able to sign Robert shows how far the club has come in a short space of time.
“He really wanted to come here, and I’m delighted that he has understood the ambition of the club and wanted to be a part of things.
“It’s not an easy decision for players to drop down leagues, but he has a lot of time for the club and is really excited about being back.
“This is a signing for the next few years, and he’ll be here for the long-term. You can build a club around players like this.”
