Reserves at home to Stokesley on Non-League Day

South Shields Reserves are looking to maintain their goal-den form on Saturday when they host Stokesley in the Wearside League.

The Mariners have scored 10 goals in their last two games as they continue to progress as a team after a difficult opening to the campaign.

They have won four of their 11 games in the Wearside League, and could move as high as 11th in the table if they beat 16th-placed Stokesley in Saturday’s 2.30pm kick-off.

The game is taking place at the Harton and Westoe Miners’ Welfare Ground, and SSFC supporters who are unable to make it to the FA Trophy match on Scarborough Athletic would be warmly welcomed, with admission costing just £2 for adults and £1 for concessions.

Last time out, the reserves beat Wolviston 5-2 in the Durham Trophy thanks to a hat-trick from captain Graham Stephenson, as well as goals from David Conroy and Leon McKeith.

Stephenson and Conroy will be familiar names with many of the supporters who followed the club during its two years in Peterlee, with both having played regularly for the Mariners in the 2014-15 season.

McKeith, meanwhile, was recently promoted to the reserves team after impressing at Under-18 level for Shields.

In their previous game, the reserves won another entertaining encounter 5-3 against Richmond at Harton and Westoe.

Another youngster who made his debut for the SSFC first-team during the Peterlee years, Logan Powell, was among those on the scoresheet. Joining him were Jake McDermott with two, and Jordan Reed and Nathan Baddams with one each.

Just two seasons ago, South Shields against Stokesley was a first-team fixture in Northern League Division Two, but the senior sides are now three divisions apart following the Mariners’ two promotions, and Stokesley’s relegation to the Wearside League.

Stephenson actually played for the Mariners’ first-team in a 4-1 win over Stokesley in November 2014.

After Saturday, the reserves also have a home game against Coxhoe Athletic on Wednesday, with kick-off at 7.30pm. Support at both games would be hugely appreciated.

The team, of course, is managed by Leepaul Scroggins, who is assisted by David Graham, Christopher Reay and Simon Parkin. All four know the club inside-out, with Scroggins, Graham and Parkin all having had numerous successful spells with the Mariners as players, while Reay has been associated with the club for almost all of his life. His father is the club’s secretary, Philip Reay, while he has been involved as a supporter and coach for the best part of two decades.

Please show your support for them and the team if you’re able to!
