Promotion explained: Why the Mariners are just one point away
South Shields are just one point away from securing promotion to the Evo-Stik Premier Division.
The Evo-Stik North Division is guaranteed three promotion places this season. They will be taken up by the teams which finish in the top two, and the victor in the play-offs.
However, as part of a reorganisation process implemented by the FA, one league at step four level will receive an additional promotion place this season.
That place will go to the third-placed team at step four level which has the best points per game ratio.
As it stands, the Evo-Stik North Division looks likely to receive the extra promotion spot because of the consistency shown by top three South Shields, Scarborough Athletic and Hyde United this season.
Should any of those teams reach 89 points and finish in third position, they are guaranteed to have a better points per game ratio than any other third-placed finisher at step four.
So that means that Shields, who are currently on 88 points, require just one more point to seal their promotion.
Even if they were to draw one and lose four of their final five fixtures and finished third, they would have a better points per game tally than any other third-placed team at step four.
Perhaps more simple is that, following Hyde’s draw at Atherton Collieries on Monday, Shields need eight points from their final five games to guarantee they will win the title.
The Mariners have the chance to seal promotion when they host Glossop North End on Tuesday.
