Preview: South Shields vs Chester-le-Street
South Shields are expected to have a near full-strength squad to choose from as they take on Chester-le-Street Town at Mariners Park in the League Cup on Tuesday.
The Mariners, who are looking for a 16th consecutive victory in all competitions, will be without the suspended Lewis Teasdale.
However, manager Jon King is hopeful the rest of his squad will be available for Shields’ third fixture against the Cestrians in just four weeks.
They have won on the previous two occasions, but King knows his side will not find it easy against a side which is still flying high in second in Northern League Division Two.
He said: “It’s another tough game for us, and the two teams know all about each other.
“Chester-le-Street are very direct and have got a good front two, so we’re going to have to defend well.
“It’s good for us, though, that we have almost everyone available, and we had a good rest on Saturday with our game being called off.”
Defender Daryll Hall has become a crowd favourite in recent weeks, and is even the subject of a new terrace chant.
Supporters have adapted Oasis song ‘Wonderwall’ with the lyrics ‘You’re my Daryll Hall’, and the experienced player is loving every minute of playing in front of them.
He said: “The fans are getting better every week, home and away.
“We keep saying they’re like a 12th man, and they keep you going during games.
“It’s hard to keep a straight face sometimes during games when they start singing about you, and they’ve got quite a few songs now for the whole squad.
“It’s nice when they get behind you, and gives you a bit of a kick.”
King, too, is looking forward to Shields playing at home after a run of three consecutive away games.
He said: “We’ve had three away games on the spin, so it will be nice to be back at home.
“We’re hoping for another good turnout, because the fans have been incredible so far this season.
“We’ve got two big games this week, with Tow Law at home on Saturday, and we’re building up to the FA Vase match at Consett on November 21.”
Kick-off in the League Cup tie at Mariners Park is at 7.30pm.
