South Shields Women’s final scheduled pre-season test takes place this Sunday, when they face Whitehaven AFC Ladies at Harton Welfare (2pm kick-off).
The Mariners will be hoping to continue their perfect start to pre-season, with three wins from three matches secured against Washington FC Women, Wallsend BC Women Reserves and Consett Ladies.
They will come up against a Whitehaven AFC team who should be in high spirits, given their recent promotion into the Lancashire Women’s County League Premier Division.
That division is in tier seven of the women’s football pyramid - two tiers below the NERWFL Premier Division, which Shields competes in.
It promises to be an exciting occasion as supporters could get to see the lasses in action at a familiar backdrop for the first time, given it will be their first home match.
Alex’s thoughts
Head coach Alex Miller says she virtually has a full squad to pick from this weekend.
“I think nigh-on everyone’s available at the weekend,” she said.
“Ellie White’s 50/50 - we’re really hoping that she’s going to be alright to play this weekend.
“It would be fantastic to get her back in; she’s been a big miss.
“A bit of good news from Monica [Innes] today: she’s not going to be ready for the weekend but we’re looking at maybe getting her back into training next week.
“Looking forward, lots of positives.”
