SSFC Women travel to Hull United this weekend for league fixture

South Shields Women take on bottom-placed Hull United Women away from home in the NERWFL Premier Division this Sunday (2pm kick-off).

The lasses are in high spirits after last week’s historic victory against Halifax FC Women on penalties in the first round proper of the Women’s FA Cup.

A tantalising tie at home against Liverpool Feds awaits in two weeks’ time, but the immediate focus this week is on Hull United.

The visitors have won just one game in the league this season, a 1-0 win last week against York RI Ladies, and they sit in 11th place after six matches played.

Shields suffered heartbreak last time out in the league, when a 90th-minute winner condemned Shields to a 1-0 defeat against top-placed Chester-le-Street Town Ladies.

Shields got off to a dream start last season with a 4-0 win at Haworth Park in September 2023 - Sophie Greener, Becca Emery, Becki McMahon and Ebony Longstaff got the goals that day.

Alex’s thoughts

Head coach Alex Miller won’t read too much into the hosts’ tricky start to the season.

“This league is not one that you can really predict,” she said earlier this week.

“It’s quite inconsistent in terms of results; teams that you mightn’t expect to win go and get results.

“Hull United will be no different - they are a good team, they’re a strong, physical team.

“We know when we’ve come up against them in previous years, that if we allow them an inch, then they’ll take an opportunity and we’ll be on the back foot.

“So it’s definitely something we can’t take for granted.”

Eva’s thoughts

Eva McDonald spoke to us this week off the back of the team’s impressive cup win, as she reminded the team not to let that result become a distraction.

“Everyone is still buzzing from the Halifax game,” she said, “it was a mint day!

“For the Hull United game, I’m really looking forward to it, and it will be good to get back to focusing on the league.”

Information for supporters

Kick-off at Haworth Park (HU6 7AB) is at 2pm this Sunday, November 10th.

The hosts have a ‘pay what you think it’s worth’ scheme for admission.

There will be updates on our Twitter/X (@SSFCWomen) and our Instagram pages (@southshieldswomenfc) throughout the day; before, during and after the game.

It’s a long trip but we would appreciate any support, if possible!
