SSFC Women return to action against Redcar

South Shields Women hope to return to winning ways this Sunday when they take on Redcar Town at Harton Welfare in the NERWFL Premier Division (2pm kick-off).

Shields were without a game last weekend and will be wanting to put the cup exit against Gateshead Leam Rangers behind them, facing a Redcar side whose only victory so far came a fortnight ago against Hull United. Top scorer Jessica Round bagged a brace on that occasion as she grabbed her seventh league strike of the campaign.

Sophie Greener and Eve Gatens netted a brace each in the reverse fixture, with Jaz Elliott-Wood adding to the scoresheet in a 5-0 victory on Teesside back in September.

Matt’s thoughts

Head coach Matt Gatiss is looking forward to seeing the team get back on the pitch after last weekend’s postponement.

He said: “After a bit of an enforced break with the weather, the girls are really keen to move on from the County Cup game and get results back on track.

“This Sunday provides that opportunity, but we are under no illusions that this will be a tough game as Redcar have started to turn a corner and will be difficult opposition.

“We are glad to be welcoming some players back from injury, and hopefully now we can kick on with the season.”

There are 14 big games left of the league campaign, and there is just one automatic promotion spot at hand.

Shields will need to do all they can to compete with leaders Sunderland West End and any others in the mix, as yet again the title fight is sure to be tightly contested.
