Jess Spark has suggested South Shields Women “deserved a bit more” from their 2-0 defeat against Bradford City AFC Women on Sunday.
The lasses fell short against a team who came into the game on tremendous form, with an eight - now nine - game winning streak, which is unmatched by any other side in the NERWFL Premier Division.
It seemed to be a marked improvement, however, from the 3-1 defeat against Alnwick Town Ladies a week prior, so there were definitely some positives to take from the game, in her view.
“I think our performance definitely doesn’t reflect the scoreline and we deserved a bit more from the game,” she said.
“We battled very hard in and out of possession and showed what we are capable of.”
It was always going to be difficult for the lasses knowing Bradford City’s momentum and that has arguably played a role in justifying how the final score might have come about.
She continued: “Against teams like Bradford, with their current form, it’s difficult to underestimate them.
“We know they are a strong side so I would say we were prepared for a competitive game where we would be challenged.
“I do, however, think that their current form would’ve helped their confidence as a team.”
The support of the fans has been outstanding and on behalf of the squad, Spark wanted to pay tribute to that backing - particularly given the difficult run of games lately.
“I think the fans have such an important role in keeping spirits up in the team,” she added.
“We’ve had a frustrating run over the past few weeks but it is always rewarding with the recurring support of the fans.”
Shields are out of action this week, but they return next Sunday for an away visit to York RI Ladies - Spark argues that break might have come at a good time for the squad.
She finished: “Hopefully a week off will give us all a chance to relax and reset ourselves after the past few games, and can give us a real chance to build some confidence and have a competitive game against York.”
