South Shields Women welcome a home crowd for the first time since November as they take on Wakefield AFC Women this Sunday (2pm kick-off).
The Mariners lost their unbeaten streak in the league last Sunday to a resilient Barnsley side who sit top of the NERWFL Premier Division, following a thrilling 90 minutes which saw Shields lose it at the death.
Now all attention turns to Downhill Hub when Wakefield - who fell victim to a 4-1 defeat against the lasses back in October - will no doubt be out for revenge.
Eve Gatens netted a brace, while Sophie Greener (with arguably the goal of the season) and Jade Dryden contributed to the scoreline that day, and Shields fans will be hoping for more of the same this time round.
There are nine big home games left of the season meaning home support is more important than ever now, so any and all encouragement would go a long way.
Alex’s thoughts
Assistant head coach Alex Miller insists last Sunday’s defeat against the Reds doesn’t define the team as they look to go again this weekend.
She said: “They’re a really close-knit group of lasses and it’s just been a case of re-grouping and getting morale back up. We know our unbeaten streak is gone but at the end of the day we’re still in a really, really good position.
“Matt and the rest of the team just highlighted that it’s not the end of the season for us. We’ve still got a massive second half to go.
“The lasses have put in two good shifts this week - plenty of work on our normal principles of play, getting ready to go again for the weekend.”
