Berwick Rangers are the opposition on Saturday as South Shields get their pre-season games programme underway near the Scottish border.
A sizable contingent of travelling Mariners is expected to cheer on Kevin Phillips’ side at Shielfield Park, where as many as seven new signings could make their first appearance for the club.
It promises to be an exciting afternoon as Shields begin their on-pitch preparations for 2022-23 with a fresh look and a new kit, with the team to wear the sky blue and white away strip which was launched last Friday.
Berwick play in the fifth tier of Scottish football – the Lowland League – and finished eighth last season.
They are a club with rich history dating back to 1881, and were the only club from outside Scotland in the Scottish Professional Football League until their relegation in 2019.
Manager’s views
Ahead of the game, Shields manager Kevin Phillips gave a feature-length interview as he looked ahead to his side’s pre-season programme and discussed how the players have fared since their return to training.
Team news
Dillon Morse will miss the trip to Berwick as he continues his recovery from a groin operation, as will JJ Hooper, who has a slight hamstring injury.
A decision is yet to be made on the availability of Callum Ross as he readies himself for his first appearance since January, having undergone knee surgery.
