NPL Match Preview: Radcliffe vs South Shields

South Shields travel to sixth-placed Radcliffe on Wednesday as they aim to return to winning ways in the Pitching In Northern Premier League (7.45pm kick-off).

A win for the Mariners at Neuven Stadium would see them climb to the top of the table, despite Saturday's 3-2 defeat at Warrington Town.

This is one of Shields' games in hand following their exploits in the Emirates FA Cup, and they will be up against a Radcliffe side in impressive form.

Boro have lost just one of their last eight league matches, and were most recently in action on Saturday when they held leaders Gainsborough Trinity to a 2-2 draw.

Manager's views

Shields manager Kevin Phillips says his team must be ready for a battle on Wednesday.

He said: “We’ve got a run of games coming up away from home and we have to match the opposition as well as show our quality with the ball.

“We must be better than we were on Saturday, but the beauty of this league is that you can put things right quickly and don’t have to stew on results for too long.

“We’ve recovered and have to be ready to go again on Wednesday.

“We will definitely be fighting and battling to try to put it right and get a result.

“Things went against us on Saturday but we have a chance to bounce back.”

Team news

Shields are hoping to welcome back Michael Woods (Achilles) but are expected to be without Tom Broadbent (leg), Conor Newton (calf) and Robert Briggs (foot). Sam Hodgson is back in training after a foot injury.
