Martin Smith Extends Contract and is named Vice Captain

South Shields FC are delighted to announce that Martin Smith has been named Vice Captain and has extended his contract for two years.

The midfielder joined the Club in 2022 from Hartlepool United and was an integral member of the Northern Premier League title-winning side of the same season.

Smith scored three goals and assisted five in his inaugural season in claret and blue as the Mariners wrapped up the title.

The 28-year-old made 38 appearances in the Vanarama National League North last season and admits that he is 'hungry for more' as Shields look to go one better than the prior campaign and reach the play-offs.

"It was a no-brainer for me,

"I don't want to be playing my football anywhere else, I love being here and I'm really looking forward to the season ahead and the coming years because I'm really hungry in terms of being so close last year, and it was really important for me and the rest of the players, manager and staff that we're gonna take this on, and go one step further.

Smith was involved in an accident in June which has seen him ruled out of Shields' opening pre-season games, but he has not let the setback diminish his determination to get back in the side.

"I want to get back and fit, fully firing and playing every week.

"I've got a real fire and determination inside which I'm having to control at the minute because I'm just desperate to be out there.

Shields Manager Elliott Dickman was pleased to retain Smith for two more years.

"We are delighted that Martin has agreed a new contract with us.

"His commitment to the club as well as his performances, especially since Christmas, have been outstanding.

"Martin has leadership qualities both on and off the pitch, which is why it was an easy decision for us to ask him to be our Vice Captain and agree on a new contract.

Smith becomes Vice Captain to Robert Briggs, who takes the armband from Club legend Blair Adams.

"He is so supportive of all his teammates and does so much to help and support our younger players.

"His competitive nature and his character is an amazing quality that he possesses. He is a huge part of our team and it is a pleasure to have him extend his stay with us."
