Mariners knocked out of the Frank Pattison Challenge Cup

South Shields were knocked out of the Frank Pattison Challenge Cup on Monday night in a 1-0 defeat against a well-worked Gateshead outfit at 1st Cloud Arena.

Lucas Lowery proved to be the difference-maker for the Heed as they advanced to the second round of the competition at the expense of the young Mariners team.

His 53rd minute strike was the only goal scored that evening in an otherwise low-key affair.

Dillon Morse started the game, offering some first-team representation out there, along with familiar names such as Ewan McGowan, James Sloan and Bryan Taylor.

Ryan Chater was booked for the visitors just four minutes into the match for a dive on the edge of the box, in what was the first action of note that evening.

Matty Cassap did well to stop Kieran Taylor from burying home his 10th minute strike in the top-right corner.

Lewis Henry knocked his effort narrowly wide six minutes later - despite the scores being tied at the break, there were moments of quality by both sides to shout about.

Cassap pulled off a fantastic save to deny McGowan from close range, while Ollie Walker did as well to block Callum Bone’s shot.

Lowery would get the winning goal eight minutes after the restart, when Chater played him through on goal as he aimed his shot at Walker from near-range.

There wasn’t an awful lot the Shields keeper could have done, in fairness, to prevent that going in.

And while the Mariners kept knocking, the door wouldn’t open for them, although it almost did a second time in the closing stages for the Heed.

Harry Gettins struck the post when he was one-on-one with Walker just before the whistle.

The first team are back in action this Saturday when they travel to Southport in the Vanarama National League North, looking to bounce back after last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Needham Market.
