South Shields Women’s Annece Legg says Sunday’s 4-1 win against Spennymoor Town Ladies was “exactly what we hoped for.”
The player of the match spoke to us afterwards about how she found the team’s performance and what went well on an afternoon to remember for The Mariners.
“I’m absolutely over the moon to get player of the match, although I think the whole team deserves credit for an outstanding performance,” she said.
“I feel each player gave it their all and I feel like we did everything we could possibly do to get the win.
“It was great to be a part of and I’m happy to add to the scoreline with my two goals.”
Matches against The Moors have always been classics (the two teams met four times last season and both teams won twice) and Sunday was no exception.
She continued: “It’s always a tough game against Spennymoor as we’ve seen and experienced from past results but it is also exciting, because we have so much determination within the squad.
“It was clear everyone wanted to win against a strong Spennymoor side, and the performance we gave proved that.”
The win put Shields second in the NERWFL Premier Division standings, with only Ponteland United Women - who beat Harrogate Town Women 5-1 - ahead of them.
It wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing backing from fans at Harton Welfare.
“It was a brilliant start to the season and ultimately I think we were the much better team so we deserved it,” Legg added.
“That’s also down to the fans who get behind us and support us, they play a big part in keeping us going and we love that more and more people are coming along to show their support.
“I even had a little fan of my own at the end of the match, Bobby, who wanted a photo and it was lovely to meet her.
“It’s just such a nice feeling getting that little bit of recognition.”
The manner of which the lasses played out there should give the team a lot of confidence.
Legg finished: “The girls and myself are on such a high and we thoroughly deserve to be after such a good performance.
"It’s exactly what we hoped for and have been working towards and I have no doubt that we will continue to do amazing things this season and finish higher in the table.”
