Legg hails SSFC Women teammates for "stand-out performance" against Moors

Annece Legg has hailed her South Shields Women teammates after they put in a “stand-out performance” against Spennymoor Town Ladies on Sunday.

Their 6-2 win at The Brewery Field extended Shields’ winning streak to four in a row, as the lasses turned up the heat in a display they can rightfully be proud of.

Legg herself grabbed the team’s first goal of the afternoon, while Ellie White, Eve Gatens and hat-trick hero Cat Abusada all got involved afterwards.

“I think it was a stand-out performance for all of us and the score proved that,” she reflected.

“We all stuck together as a team from the very start, right up until the full-time whistle.

“We did well in every area on the pitch, whether that was defending or attacking, we broke Spennymoor down and didn’t give them much room to play.

“Everyone was determined to get the win.”

Previous contests against the Moors have tended to be full of passion and emotion, and Sunday was no exception - Coral Colledge’s red card just before half-time changed the dynamic of the match.

It afforded Shields the extra player, which they duly capitalised on during the second-half.

Legg added: “It’s always a good battle against Spennymoor; I think at the time of the red card being given, it made things more comfortable for us as we had a two goal advantage, but that still didn’t stop us continuing to push and get more goals.

“We all remained calm and carried on with our game plan which was obviously working.

“Again, it made us more determined knowing we had the overload.”

Although the team were left disappointed by the nature of their two conceded goals, there can be positives to take in that the Mariners responded up the other end of the pitch in quick succession - twice.

She continued: “We were gutted to have conceded knowing that their goals were our own mistakes, which we have to learn from.

“But we showed resilience to get another two goals almost immediately after they scored.”

It leaves the team in a fantastic position as they charge down the top four spots, or potentially third place, in the NERWFL Premier Division with their final two games this week.

Up first is a visit to ninth-placed Wallsend BC Women under the Kirkley Park floodlights this Thursday.

“Everyone is excited for the last two games of the season to hopefully carry on our winning streak,” Legg finished.

“It’s a shame about Sophie (Greener) who has obviously had her season cut slightly short due to her injury at the weekend, as she has been a big asset for us this season.

“We know she will be cheering us on as we all want to finish the season on a high!”

Kick-off at Kirkley Park this Thursday, April 17th is at 7:45pm. It will be free entry - visit our social media channels for more information closer to matchday.
