Innes: SSFC Women can be "proud of" historic cup journey

Monica Innes has given her honest assessment after South Shields Women were knocked out of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup against Liverpool Feds on Sunday.

A difficult second-half for the Mariners saw them concede 11 goals, as the third-tier opponents showed their quality to advance into the third round proper.

“It was a tough game today; we knew they weren’t going to be a pushover,” she admitted.

“First half, I think we pretty much matched them, both attacking and defending.

“Coming out into the second half, conceding the first couple goals I feel like confidence dropped within the team.

“Having said that we kept going, we kept battling and we kept trying to play the way we play which is all that is ever asked.”

The scoreline tells only part of the historic journey the lasses have been on - from the win against Ponteland United in September, to October’s comeback victory over FC United of Manchester, and November’s penalty shoot-out drama against Halifax.

She added: “We’ve had a great run in the cup - making history across the club is a huge achievement to be proud of.

“It shows how hard we work and how much we thrive to be the best we can be, both individually and as a team.”

A magnificent 333 supporters gave unwavering support throughout and that positivity, especially after the whistle despite the heavy loss, shouldn’t be taken for granted.

“The support today was exceptional as always,” she continued.

“It’s a tough game to play when the score was what it was and I can imagine it’ll be hard to watch it as well, but, for everyone to come along and give non-stop support for the 90 minutes is something we are all grateful for and massively appreciate.”

Looking ahead, Shields face an uphill battle if they are to catch NERWFL Premier Division leaders Chester-le-Street Town - who sit seven points ahead at this stage - but nothing is impossible.

“Now, we focus on the league and we are still in the County Cup as well,” Innes finished.

“Chester-le-Street are doing well in the league, but there’s no reason why we can’t apply the pressure and get up there with them, it’s there for the taking and we will be up there battling for it.”

Next up is a trip to face York RI Ladies this Sunday at 2pm. More details will be shared soon on the club’s website!
