Back to league action for SSFC Women against Wallsend BC

It’s back to NERWFL Premier Division action for South Shields Women, who host Wallsend BC Women at Harton Welfare on Sunday (2pm kick-off).

The Mariners reached the third qualifying round of the Women’s FA Cup last week, with a 3-1 win against high-flying Ponteland United Women, but the focus is firmly on Wallsend now.

Both teams have a point to prove in a way - Shields will want to make up for the 3-0 defeat against them in April, while the visitors will want to bounce back after their mixed start to the season (three defeats and one win in all competitions so far).

It is still early days, but 20% of the league campaign will have been played after this weekend’s game.

Alex’s thoughts

Head coach Alex Miller might have a bigger selection of players to pick from on Sunday.

She said: “We’ve got our players who have been away back in (Becki [McMahon], Jen [Wootten], Josie [Foster]).

“We’re also hoping to get our first International Academy players on there as well, but we are waiting for some of the paperwork to go through on that, so we’re not 100% on that yet.

“Unfortunately, Annece [Legg] is still carrying that knock on her ankle, and it’s not something we want to risk making worse, so we’re very doubtful that she’ll be available for the weekend.

“Apart from that, we’re looking good in terms of numbers.”

Scarlett’s thoughts

Back-to-back player of the match award winner Scarlett Gowans suggested there isn’t much need to look back at past results, when thinking about what Sunday might offer.

"The lasses aren’t focused on the past result against them,” she said, “we’re focused on now and keeping up the momentum we currently have.

“It’ll be great to play them on home turf and have the backing of the supporters, for what is sure to be a great game!”

Information for supporters

Kick-off at Harton Welfare (NE34 0NA) is at 2pm this Sunday, September 29th.
