On This Day: South Shields 2-1 Chelsea
By Daniel Prince
Today’s date (April 14) marks 87 years to the day since South Shields last met Chelsea in a competitive fixture.
And it was a terrific day for the Mariners, who beat the Blues 2-1 at Horsley Hill in 1928.
Goals from Alan Grenyer and Thomas Matthewson sealed the victory for Shields in the second tier of the Football League.
Shields’ victory over Chelsea was not enough to prevent relegation to the Third Division North, though, in which they finished 10th the following season.
Shields and Chelsea have met eight times in competitive matches, with the sides registering two wins apiece, with four draws. The highlight for the Mariners was a 5-1 victory in October 1926.
Since those years, of course, the clubs have gone in somewhat different directions, with Chelsea looking set to win their fifth English league title this season.
