Northallerton Town vs South Shields Preview

By Bob Wray

The Mariners travel to play Northallerton Town tomorrow, hoping that there are no adverse weather problems on this occasion.

That would mean the 2014 programme of fixtures can at long last begin, after numerous recent disappointments with a succession of games being postponed.

The opening game of Shields’s Division Two season at Peterlee’s Eden Lane ground against Wednesday’s hosts resulted in a 2-2 draw, a result which has been repeated to date in 11 instances.

Hopefully, Shields will give a good account of themselves and get something of the game, which will no doubt be an entertaining match with the home side enjoying a successful season so far with a high league table standing and playing decent football.

In the run in to the end of the season’s programme does lie an opportunity for Shields to begin to turn too many drawn games into wins to maximise management, committee and supporters’s hopes of a good top half table final placing.

So hopefully beginning at Northallerton, the Mariners will capitalise on goalscoring opportunities and deny and restrict the home X1 with good defensive play.

Shields have produced some good displays this season, and the excellent Bishop Auckland DCC result readily comes to mind, for with the right mindset and attitude they can prevail.

Hopefully Wednesday will be therefore more than just a good game.

With half a dozen new players signed, we may see several on from the start and others on the bench with an opportunity to feature at some point in the game.

Most probably now two or three more wins will secure complete safety from any relegation possibilities, however unlikely that situation may seem at this stage.

So, a good sporting contest to enjoy, and once again most hopefully the weather does not cause yet another postponement and we get something to bring home from a long trip.

COME ON THE MARINERS.
