North Shields preview
By Daniel Prince
FA Vase champions North Shields are the visitors to Mariners Park on Wednesday for the River Tyne derby.
The Ebac Northern League Division One side, who finished fourth last season in their first campaign since promotion, are sure to provide a strong test for Jon King’s Mariners.
South Shields will go into the game on the back of Saturday’s 1-0 reverse at Boldon CA, but are expected to make a number of changes for the visit of their cross-river neighbours.
Defender Daryll Hall could be available for the game after returning from Australia, while it is also hoped that the likes of Leepaul Scroggins and David Foley will be able to play a part.
Mariners first-team coach Dave Hall is expecting the friendly to be a ‘great advert’ for football in the two towns.
He said: “It should be a cracking game, and it’s great to have a derby match so early in the season.
“I’m sure there will be a great crowd there, so it’s a big opportunity for the players.
“We have a few carrying injuries, so there will be chances for players to stake a claim for a place.
“It will be a massive game, and I’m sure it will be a great advert for both South and North Shields.
“They are two great footballing towns for support. There’s a fever in both towns for their football clubs, and it should be a cracking game.”
You can get a copy of the match programme for the North Shields friendly at the ground for £1.50. The latest edition includes an interview with Jonny Wightman, Jon King’s manager’s column and a feature looking at the history of the two Shields clubs. Below is the front cover. Meanwhile, if you would like a copy of the programme from the friendly against Darlington earlier this month, make a request at the gate.
